  Homemade Bags from Reused Materials

Crafty devil that I am, I sew and sell fabric bags in two styles. First were the all-purpose, two-handled totes. Then, due to popular request, came a one-strap, over-the-sholder model.

Like all the coolest stuff, I started making these shopping bags just for myself. I had a bunch of great (but worn-out) old shirts, and I wanted to stop bringing home so many plastic grocery bags. I pulled out the ol' Singer Style-O-Matic and stitched together some totes in cool colors and patterns. Next thing I know, other people wanted them too.

Tree huggin' chic
Even though it would be faster and easier to buy fabric, I still make every bag from recycled materials. The point has always been to save resources--reuse fabric and reduce consumption of plastic bags--so I collect old clothes from friends (or yardsales, or the street) to give them a new life as Earth-friendly accessories. Say goodbye to those drab canvas shopping bags!

Twice the quality, half the guilt
I made it myself, and it's got my name on the tag. That's why every bag is put together so carefully. Fabrics are chosen for looks and strength, and all seams are double sewn. Handle attachments are reinforced with a neat "X." It's likely that any one of my bags has been given more time and attention than any manufactured item in your wardrobe.

Not only that, but there's no sweatshop churning out bags by the thousands. No enslaved political prisonerers. No Asian children. Just me, John Wilmot. Dot com.

Where to get 'em
I used to sell in shops in Portland and San Francisco, as well as special events, but that was a pain in the butt. So now I'm done with the pret-a-porter. It's all couture these days. (In other words, most bags are now custom designed & fitted for each individual.)
